Track a rail shipment
Paste a wagon number, block reference or consignment note. We validate the reference and tell you what it means.
Live position tracking is not connected yet. Resolving a wagon to a current location needs the operating railway's system, and we are still building that pipeline. What works today is reference validation — which catches a mistyped number before it wastes anyone's time. See system status.
What rail tracking will show
Rail has no single reference that survives a whole journey the way an ocean bill of lading does — a cross-border move can change operator, consignment regime and even gauge. The pipeline being built normalises those handovers into one timeline:
- 1 LoadingWagon loaded and released at the origin terminal.
- 2 DepartureTrain departs; the scheduled path becomes an actual path.
- 3 Traction changeA new locomotive, and often a new operator, takes the train over.
- 4 Border crossingCustoms, and the change of consignment-note regime.
- 5 Gauge changeTransshipment or bogie swap, where the corridor breaks gauge.
- 6 InterchangeHandover between operators at a marshalling yard.
- 7 DerampWagon released at the destination terminal.
UIC country codes we decode
Digits 3–4 of a wagon number are the registering country. We decode 25 codes covering the networks in our operator registry — a valid number carrying a code outside this set is still reported valid.
