Cookie Policy

Last updated: 2026-09-10

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store on your device. Cookies let us recognise you across pages, remember your session and keep the experience useful without forcing you to sign in on every page load.

Right now RailScanner sets no cookies at all. Accounts are not open yet, so there is no session to remember. The table below is the set we will use once sign-in launches, published in advance so there are no surprises.

Cookie categories we use

We classify cookies in two categories:

  • Essential — required to operate the Service (authentication, security). Cannot be disabled because the Service won't work without them.
  • Functional — improve the user experience (remembered filters, recent searches). Can be cleared from your browser settings without losing access.

We do not set advertising cookies, retargeting pixels or cross-site tracking cookies, and we do not use third-party analytics that profile individual users.

Cookies we set

Name Purpose Duration Category Status
rs_session Holds your signed-in session so you stay authenticated across pages. 1 hour (auto-refreshed in the background) Essential Not yet set
rs_refresh Refresh token used to obtain new session tokens without re-prompting for your password. Enables the 60-day "stay signed in" behaviour. 60 days Essential Not yet set
recent_routes Stores your last few route searches so the home page can offer them as quick links. No personal data — just station pairs. Until you clear browser storage Functional Not yet set

Third-party cookies

Embedded providers may set their own cookies in your browser when you interact with their features inside RailScanner. These are governed by the respective provider's policy, not ours. Payments are handled by Payfyio on its own hosted checkout page. Because that page is served from Payfyio's domain rather than ours, any cookies it sets are first-party to Payfyio and governed by Payfyio's policy — they are not set on RailScanner and are not readable by us. No third-party provider sets cookies on RailScanner today.

How to control cookies

You can clear or block cookies from your browser settings. Note that blocking Essential cookies will sign you out and prevent you from signing back in.

  • Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data
  • Safari: Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data
  • Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
